Miscreants hacked to death Payaraband UP Chairman Jamaat Leader Mahbubur Rahman Mahbub of Rangpur’s Mithapukur Upazila. The incident took place at Payaraband Bazaar last Sunday around 9:30 pm. Meanwhile, he was buried in the family cemetery yesterday after prayers at 3 o’clock on Monday.
Citing preliminary investigation, Rangpur District Police Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Tariqul Islam said that the local Union Parishad Chairman Mahbubur Rahman Mahbub closed his medicine shop in Payraband Bazar around 9:30 pm on Sunday. As soon as he got on the road, a man hit the Chairman’s neck three times in a row with a cane from a fish shop on the side of the road. When he was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in a coma, the doctors declared him dead.
This police officer also said that according to the initial investigations that we have received, one person has been detained. His name is Haroon Or Rashid. He is the younger brother of Abdul Hakim Ali, a fishmonger on the road to the south of the chairman’s shop. Harun used to cut fish in that shop. We brought him to the police station. The investigation process has started. I am collecting various types of information regarding this. The cane used during the murder has been recovered.
Rangpur District Police Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB and Media) Ifte Khair Alam said that the body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. She was buried in the family graveyard after prayers at the local Begum Rokeya Girls’ High School grounds. This police officer said that the family is preparing to file a murder case in this incident.
Eyewitnesses said that Payaraband UP Chairman Mahbubur Rahman used to do drug pharmacy business in Payaraband market after the work of Union Parishad. Damdama-Hulashu road is on the south side of his shop. A local man named Abdul Hakim Ali was doing fish business next to that road. As soon as the chairman came to the street, Kalam’s younger brother Harun, who was in the fish shop, came and beat Mahbubur Rahman three times from behind. Locals took him to the surgery department of Rangpur Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Hundreds of people rushed to Payraband Bazar due to the anger of Mahbubur Rahman. Harun threatened to kill the locals if they interfered. At one point the locals caught him and locked him up in a shop called Samia Traders and Telecom Store.
When the news of the chairman’s death spread, there was tension in the area. Immediately after the incident, a large number of additional police were deployed there under the supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police Tariqul Islam.
Eyewitnesses said that a leader of Payaraband Union Awami League, present there, told the police that Harun is crazy, let him go. Awami League leader’s speech made the local people more excited. Then the police calmed them down by announcing on the mic. The police said on the mic, the killer will be punished accordingly. You stay calm. Later the tension subsided. At 11:30 pm, the police took Harun out of the shop and left for the police station, taking him away from the scene under strict police protection.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Tariqul Islam said, “We cannot say anything about this yet.” Because we took him. After the conversation, I will be able to tell the expert’s opinion about whether he is crazy or good. We are unable to comment at this time.
According to local sources, Haroon (40) is the son of Azim Uddin of Jotshasthi village of Payaraband union. Earlier used to drive rickshaw in Sylhet. He has a seven-eight-year-old daughter. His wife went away from him due to lack of marriage. Six years ago, Haroon returned to the village from Sylhet and started making a living by driving a van. Also cut fish in brother Abdul Hakim’s fish shop. During the incident, Abdul Hakim Ali went to various people in the market to collect the remaining money from the sale of fish.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami’s verified Facebook page claimed that Awami League terrorists hacked to death Jamaat-e-Islami’s nominee Mahbubar Rahman, chairman of Mithapukur Payaraband Union of Rangpur.
Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists said in their Facebook wall post that Mahbubur Rahman was the former president of Rangpur district student camp, currently assistant secretary of Mithapukur upazila Jamaat. He was elected chairman after defeating Awami League nominated candidate as Jamaat’s candidate in the last Union Parishad elections.
Pilgrimage of people for Namaz-Janaza: Even though the time of Namaz-Janaza was announced at 3 pm on Monday, thousands of people and Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists came to Payaraband Begum Rokeya Girls’ High School grounds and surrounding areas. Prayers and prayers in the name of people. Apart from the top leaders of the district and metropolitan Jamaat, leaders and activists from different areas of the district attended. Later, he was buried in the family graveyard after prayers.

Meanwhile, his political colleague Rafiqul Islam suffered a heart attack in the market after hearing the news of Chairman Mahbub’s death. When he was taken home, he also died at 12:00 pm, family sources said.
