This information was informed in a circular from the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Agriculture on Monday.
The government had earlier allowed the import of potatoes on October 30 to control prices. Meanwhile, the prices of potatoes in the domestic market have started to decrease after the imported potatoes came to the market. In the wholesale market, domestic potatoes have reduced by Tk 15 to Tk 20 per kg. The price of potato per kg in the retail market has decreased by an average of 10 rupees. But the price of potato fixed by the government is 35 to 36 taka per kg. But potatoes are still being sold at the rate of Tk 55 to 60 per kg in the retail market. In most cases, buyers have to buy potatoes at Tk 60 per kg. Even a few days ago, buyers bought potatoes at the retail level at Tk 70-80 per kg.
Afzal Hossain, the owner of Bismillah Banizayola, a wholesale potato dealer in the capital’s Karwan Bazar, told Ajker newspaper, ‘The price of potatoes has started to fall due to the news of imports. Potatoes were sold in the wholesale market today at the price of Tk 33 to 35 per kg. Potatoes are supposed to be sold at a price of Tk 40-45 in the retail market.
