UP Chairman hacked to death in Rangpur

Payaraband Union Parishad Chairman Mahbubar Rahman of Mithapukur Upazila of Rangpur was hacked to death.

The incident took place at Payaraband Bazar at around 9:30 pm on Sunday.

Police arrested a person named Harun (50) in this incident.

The deceased Mahbubar Rahman was the former president of Rangpur district student camp and the assistant secretary of Mithapukur upazila Jamaat.

The police and relatives of the deceased said that Mahbubar Rahman’s house is in Zafarpur village of Payaraband union. He lived there with his family. He owns a drug store in Payaraband Bazar.

Last night after closing the shop, Harun attacked Mahbubar Rahman on his way home and cut his head and neck with the machetes in his hand. Later the locals rescued Mahbubar Rahman and first admitted him to Mithapukur Upazila Health Complex. When his condition deteriorated there, he was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where the doctor on duty declared him dead at around 11 pm.

When this news spread, tension spread in the area including Payraband Bazar. The local people arrested Harun along with his slaves and handed him over to the police.

Mithapukur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostafizar Rahman said, ‘Harun has been detained. He is being interrogated. Police are deployed in Payaraband area.’
