The first shipment of eggs from India has arrived in the country. The price of an egg including duty has fallen to 7 taka 23 paisa. This egg entered Bangladesh through Benapole land port of Jessore in a truck on Monday.
The company that brought these eggs, their import permit was Rs. In the first shipment, they brought 61 thousand 950 eggs. After the land port process, the egg truck left the port around 10 pm on Sunday.
According to Benapole Land Port Authority and Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) agent sources, Dhaka’s BDS Corporation has imported 61 thousand 950 eggs in an Indian cargo truck as its first shipment after the Ministry of Commerce gave permission to import eggs, at an import price of 5 taka 43 paisa. Duty 1 taka 80 paise.
Added to this is the transport cost of the Indian part. The total cost is 7 taka 23 paise. After that, other costs will be added including the transportation cost of parts of the country.

Syed Mahidul Haque, representative of C&F agent ME Enterprises of the egg importer, said that a company in Dhaka has imported 61 thousand 950 eggs in the first shipment in order to import one crore eggs. The import price of each egg including duty has fallen to seven rupees. Transport costs will be added to this.
Egg import is prohibited in Bangladesh. However, if necessary, the Ministry of Commerce may allow import with the consent of the Ministry of Livestock. A month and a half ago on September 18, the first phase allowed 4 companies to import eggs from India.
Later, in two more phases, the government allowed a total of 15 companies to import 15 crore eggs. Government decided to import to control the price of eggs in the market.
A dozen eggs are currently being sold at Tk 150 to Tk 160 in the retail market in Dhaka. Eggs are being sold at a slightly higher price in the big market depending on the quality and rank. The concerned people think that the price may come down a little more due to the importation. But for that, continuity of egg import is required. The amount of eggs that came to the country is very little. More eggs are needed to have an impact on the market.
Yar Hossain, the owner of Meem Enterprises, the company that got permission to import eggs in the first phase, said that there were many complications with the documents due to the non-importation of eggs for many days. It’s long gone now. Our eggs are also waiting to arrive.
He said that since the egg of one organization has arrived, others will come gradually.
According to the Customs Tariff List (2023-24), eggs are subject to 25 percent import duty, 5 percent advance income tax and 3 percent regulatory duty. 33 percent of total customs duty. As a result, the import of 100 rupees worth of eggs costs another 33 rupees. Apart from this, the government has given a total of four conditions for importing eggs, including importing eggs from countries free of avian virus influenza or bird flu.
