As the 29th Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU), Professor Dr. ASM Maqsood Kamal. On Saturday (November 4), the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor took charge of the office of the Vice-Chancellor of the University. At this time, the former Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman, members of teachers association, provost and dean and other officials were present.

Former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman thanked the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ASM Maqsood Kamal. He said, the President and the Prime Minister have given me the responsibility of the 29th Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, thanks to them. Special thanks to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He called me last Wednesday and advised me how to act as the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

He said, this is my university too. I also want to go higher in education in the world. For that, the Prime Minister will provide all necessary support. He has already cooperated last. To save the halls from crisis during the corona period, to increase the beauty of the university. Some work is done and some is left. He suggested how to bring this university to a standard place and how to work as a team.

Professor Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal said, you know I was engaged in various administrative and academic duties of the university. In that case, I will use the experience I have gained and work according to the instructions of the Prime Minister. The university has given temporary charge for four years, may give me senate charge at a later date, that again depends on the senate. I will work together with you as long as I live. I have that experience.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Professor of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience Department. ASM Maksud Kamal has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University. He has been appointed by the government as per Article 11(2) of the Dhaka University Order, 1973 with the approval of the President and the Chancellor.

According to the information received from the university, Professor Dr. ASM Maqsood Kamal has been serving as Vice-Chancellor (Education) since June 2020. He is a professor in the Disaster Science and Climate Resilience Department of Dhaka University. Earlier, he was working as a professor in the Department of Geology.

He was appointed as Visiting Professor at the world famous University College London, UK from April 2022 to March 2027. He has been working with the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) of this university for a long time.

Professor Dr. Maksud Kamal joined the Department of Geology of Dhaka University as a Lecturer in March 2000 and was promoted to Professor in the same department in 2010. Before joining the university, he worked as a scientific officer at the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARSO) for about six years.

Worked as a Research Fellow at Base Center for Advanced Study and Research in Natural Sciences of Dhaka University for two years. In addition, he has taught Geology, Environmental Science and Disaster Management respectively at Jahangirnagar University, Khulna University, University of Professionals and BRAC University as a part-time lecturer.

Dr. Maqsood Kamal worked for four years in the UNDP/CDMP, Bangladesh project as an Earthquake and Tsunami and Urban Disaster Management Specialist. Prior to this, he worked in 2007 as an Earthquake Disaster Specialist at UNDP/ADPC, Iran. He is well-known as an academician and researcher in disaster risk reduction, climate change mitigation and environmental conservation, both at home and abroad.

Also working as technical advisor/expert member in many projects of various government ministries and institutions. He is a member of the Disaster Management Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Government of Bangladesh. He also has experience of working with various private organizations and development aid organizations both domestically and abroad.

Professor Dr. Maksud Kamal completed SSC in 1982, HSC in 1984 and BSc (Hons) in 1988 and Masters in 1989 from the Department of Geology of Dhaka University. He obtained first division/category in all the examinations. In 1998, he obtained his Master’s degree in Applied Geomorphology and Engineering Geology from the International Institute for Geo-Information Sciences and Earth Observation, University of Twente, The Netherlands.

In 2004, he obtained his doctorate degree in Earthquake Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT), Japan. He has published 65 scientific articles in domestic and foreign journals. He has more than 100 research works including published articles, reports, book chapters. He has been contributing as a reviewer to many international journals.

He is working on knowledge management and research with the universities of different countries of the world. Among these are University College London, UK: Peking University, China, Tokyo University Japan and University of Edinburgh, UK.

Professor Dr. Maqsood Kamal has performed academic and administrative duties at almost all levels of the university. He was the founding chairman (2012-2017) of the Disaster Science and Management Division, now known as the Disaster Science and Climate Resilience Division. Served as Dean (elected four times) of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences since 2012 before becoming the Pro-Vice Chancellor.

During his tenure as Dean, he was instrumental in establishing the Department of Meteorology. He served as Principal of Master Da Suryasen Hall for two terms (2013-18). Dr. Maksud Kamal was President of Dhaka University Teachers Association for four terms (2017-20) and General Secretary for three terms (2014-16). In addition, served as President and Secretary General (2015-16) of Bangladesh University Teachers Association Federation for three terms (2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20).

During his tenure of office of teachers’ association and federation, he has played various effective roles for improving the quality of education and upholding the professionalism and dignity of teachers. Besides Dhaka University, he has been contributing as a member of Senate, Syndicate and Academic Council of various universities. He was associated with various socio-cultural and political organizations since his student days.

Dr. Maqsood Kamal is associated with various research institutes. He is the Chairman of National Oceanographic and Maritime Institute (NOAMI) and President of Bangladesh Society of Informatics (BSI). Previously Acting General Secretary of Bangladesh Geological Society (BGS) and Member of Executive Committee of Bangladesh Earthquake Society (BES).

Professor Dr. ASM Maqsood Kamal was born on 21 November 1966 in a noble Muslim family of Lakshmipur district. His father late Farid Ahmed and mother late Machuma Khatun were social philanthropists and academics. His father was also a well-known and established businessman. Dr. Maqsood Kamal’s elder, late AKM Shahjahan Kamal served as the Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism and was elected Member of Parliament for three terms.

Dr. Maqsood Kamal’s wife Syeda Afsana Ferdowsi is an educationist and University of Information Technology. and Sciences (UITS) Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Science is serving as Dean. He is the father of two sons and a daughter. Dr. Maqsood Kamal has been dedicatedly working for the backward people of the society. He is the chairman of Farid Machuma Foundation established in the name of his parents. He has been continuously contributing to the improvement of education system and quality of education at various levels.

Dr. Maqsood Kamal writes in the media on topical and contemporary political issues. He is also in electronic media. Provides subjective opinion. His writings mainly focus on natural disasters, impact of climate change, quality of education and contemporary socio-political issues.
