Pakistan-New Zealand face off today
Online desk
New Zealand had a great start to the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup. The Kiwis started the World Cup by defeating defending champions England. Then New Zealand defeated Netherlands, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Australia. On the other hand, Pakistan is on a mission to reach the semifinals once again after a long time. Where their opponent in today’s match is New Zealand. Any result other than a win in this match will deal a major blow to Babar Azam’s semi-final dreams. But it’s not just about winning. Pakistan wants a win to match the equation.
If they win, Pakistan will get their fourth win in the World Cup. 5th place in the points table. But if victory can be secured by a margin of 83 runs (subject to batting first) or 90 balls in hand (subject to batting later), then Babar Azam’s team can go for four. In that case, a win against the English in the last match of the league stage will give Pakistan a place in the semi-finals.
Opposite New Zealand will also want to win this match. They were ahead of everyone in the race for semis until the fourth round. However, three consecutive defeats have pushed them into the abyss. Defeat in this match will give a big blow to last year’s semi finalists.
New Zealand’s points are 8 in 7 matches so far. Their 5th win in the tournament would pretty much guarantee their semi-final spot. If not, besides winning against Sri Lanka in the last match, we have to look at Pakistan and Afghanistan as well.
