Hasibul Hasan Antar, a student of Savar’s private Daffodil University, died 10 days after he was injured in the beating by locals. It has been alleged that angry students have attacked and vandalized several shops.
Antar died in a hospital in Mymensingh on Thursday night. After the news reached, the students protested at Akran Bazar in Savar’s Khagan on Friday afternoon. At that time, the students clashed with the locals and chased each other, the police said.
Hasibul Hasan Antar is a fourth year student of textile engineering department of Daffodil University. His village home is in Mymensingh.
Savar Model Police Station OC Deepak Chandra Saha said, “The main accused Rahat has been arrested in the Antar murder case. District Superintendent of Police will brief on this on Saturday. Now there is additional police deployment around the campus. The situation is very normal.”
According to the students, on October 27, some local youth beat up Antar under the Birulia Bridge. He became unconscious. Later those young men left him in Khagan market and ran away.
Later the locals took Antar to Daffodil Care first. When his condition worsened, he was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital. Later his family admitted him to a hospital in Mymensingh. He died there on Thursday.
Students started protest in the afternoon demanding exemplary punishment for those involved in the incident. They started shouting slogans blaming the locals for the killing. At one stage they protested by blocking Birulia and Ashulia roads.
Later, the students attacked the Akran area with sticks and vandalized hundreds of shops and cars. At that time they protested by setting fire on the road. On getting the information, the police came and dispersed them with batons. Some students were injured.
University Director (Student Department) Syed Mizanur Rahman Raju said, “A few days ago, Antar had a problem with the locals over some issue. Later he was beaten and injured. He died while undergoing treatment on Thursday. The students protested demanding exemplary punishment for those involved in the incident.”
