Photo: Today’s NewspaperAfter the death of a student of a private university in Savar, Dhaka, angry students attacked and vandalized more than 150 shops. At that time there was a chase between the local people and the students. Later the police arrived and brought the situation under control.
This incident happened with students and locals of Daffodil University in Akran Bazar of Khagan area of Birulia Union of Savar on Friday evening. It is reported that some people were injured in the clashes.
The name of the deceased student is Hasibul Islam Antar. He is a 44th batch student of Daffodil University Department of Textiles. His village home is said to be Mymensingh.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Savar Police Station Deepak Chandra Saha confirmed the death and assault of the student.
According to Savar police station and university sources, some local people took Antar under the Birulia bridge on October 27 due to a trivial incident. Then beat him. When Antar became unconscious due to the beating, they left him in Khagan Bazar and ran away.
Later locals rescued Antar and took him to Daffodil Care first. When the condition worsened, he was taken to the local Raju Medical. Later from there he was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. Antar died on Thursday while undergoing treatment in that hospital.
According to the police, the students of the university became angry when the death was known. In protest, the students took out a procession this Friday evening. Later they started shouting slogans blaming the locals for the murder. At one point they vandalized the furniture of some shops in Akran Bazar on Birulia Savar road.
At that time, when the locals stopped them, the chase started between the two sides. Angry students attacked and vandalized more than 150 shops.
Mohammad Ali, a hotelier who was attacked, told Ajker newspaper, “Students bought petrol from a petrol shop and set fire to the bench placed in front of the shop and ransacked the shop.”
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Savar Police Station, Deepak Chandra Saha, told Ajker newspaper, “Over 150 local shops were attacked and vandalized due to the death of a student. Rahat, the main accused involved in the murder of student Antar, has been arrested. He was handed over to the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Dhaka today. Rahat admitted his involvement in the incident in the statement given under section 164 in the court. Antar has been killed because of previous enmity.’
