Atish Sen, Duars: A man was jailed for teasing a group of elephants that entered the village. The incident took place at Chanadipa in Banarhat block of Jalpaiguri district. A group of elephants entered North Chanadipa village adjacent to Moraghat forest on Thursday. It was then that several elephants, including local resident Mohammad Latif Hussain, started harassing the group. Allegedly, stones were thrown at the elephant group, clothes were set on fire and thrown at the elephant group. As a result, the elephant group became furious. When the forest department personnel tried to stop them, they also harassed the forest workers. After that, Latif was arrested by the forest department and a case was registered against him. However, Aziz Mina, a local resident of North Chanadipa area, said that the forest department’s complaint is baseless. They did not provoke the elephant group. The elephant group entered their paddy field. They were trying to drive away the elephant group. At that time the forest personnel reached the spot. The forest personnel beat them without hearing a word. They in turn beat the forest personnel. After that Latif Hussain was taken away by the forest personnel. Dhruvjyoti Biswas, ranger of the forest department’s Binnaguri Wildlife Squad, said that the person caught from North Chana Dipa area was harassing the elephant group. When the forest workers tried to stop him, he also harassed the forest workers. A case was registered against him under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act When he was produced in court on Friday, the judge ordered 15 days of judicial custody.
