Thirty-two people died and 16 others were hospitalized after a fire broke out at a drug rehabilitation camp in the city of Langarud in Gilan province, north of Tehran, Iran’s Judiciary Department’s Mizan Online news website quoted provincial chief justice Ismail Sadeghi as saying.
Meanwhile, the news agency AP, citing Iran’s state TV, said that the fire broke out in the private drug rehabilitation center in the city of Langarud on Friday morning. The fire was later put out and authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire.
According to the AP report, such accidents are not rare in Iran. Such accidents and fatalities are frequent in the West Asian country, mainly due to neglect of safety measures, outdated infrastructure and inadequate emergency services.
