The United States on Thursday called the country’s missile program a “terrible threat” after Iran unveiled a new model of long-range missile.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters, ‘Iran’s development and proliferation of ballistic missiles poses a dire threat to regional and international security and remains a significant challenge to nuclear disarmament.’
According to Iran’s Ministry of Defense, the Khyber missile will have a range of 2,000 kilometers and will be able to carry a warhead weighing one ton.
The missile launch came after a stalemate in talks on revitalizing the nuclear deal. Under the deal, Iran pledged to reduce its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.
Former US President Donald Trump canceled the agreement in 2015.
President Joe Biden’s administration has abandoned the idea of easing sanctions under a deal after major protests in the country, particularly against the religious leadership in Iran.
“A nuclear-armed Iran is likely to act more provocatively, and to that end we are committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons,” Miller said.
