Barca chief wants to play Clasico again
Barcelona, April 23, 2024 (BASS/AFP) : Barcelona president Juan Laporta has demanded a replay of El Clasico against Real Madrid if Lamine Yamal’s goal was proved wrong by the officials.
The reigning champions lost 3-2 against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday. But the controversy over Yamal’s one goal in that match is not over yet. By winning this match, Real have moved closer to the league title with a clear margin of 11 points.
16-year-old winger Yamal’s flick from a corner was saved by Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin just inside the post. In the absence of goal-line technology, VAR technology is used to report that the ball did not cross the goal line. At that time the score of the match was 1-1.
Laporta demanded that the Spanish Football Federation and the Refereeing Committee send the footage of the incident and the audio recording of the officials’ discussion to Barcelona. In this regard, the Barca chief said, ‘If the whole matter is reviewed, the club will understand where the mistake has been made. We will take all necessary measures to understand this situation well. If necessary, legal action may also be taken. We believe the goal was legal. And if that happens, we want a replay of the match. A European match has already been replayed due to a VAR error.’
In January, the match between Anderlecht and Genk in the Belgian top-flight was decided to be replayed after breaking the law, but Anderlecht’s 2-1 win was later accepted by everyone.
Earlier, Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez had mentioned that the non-use of goal-line technology in Spanish football was a disgrace immediately after the match.
