Mumbai: Dhundhumar practically on one leg. Terrible muscle tension. He was losing the ability to stand. Physio entered the field and treated. Glenn Maxwell (Glenn Maxwell) started batting again with a non-stop attitude. There was constant pressure. His match-winning knock of 201 not out off 128 balls against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai sent world cricket into a frenzy. The innings that legends like Sachin Tendulkar are calling the best ever in ODI cricket. Mad-Max’s batting record at Wankhede.
Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 is the highest individual innings for Australia in the World Cup. He broke Shane Watson’s record. Watson played an unbeaten innings of 185 runs against Bangladesh in 2011 World Cup at Mirpur. Number three on the list is Matthew Hayden. Hayden scored an unbeaten 181 against New Zealand in the 2007 World Cup in Hamilton.
Maxwell hit 10 sixes along with hitting 21 boundaries on Tuesday. He came third in the list for hitting the most number of sixes in the World Cup. Mad-Max hit a total of 43 sixes in the World Cup. He went past AB de Villiers and David Warner. Both hit sixes for 37. Chris went on top with 49 sixes. Rohit Sharma is number two with 45 sixes.
Maxwell created another feat. His unbeaten 201 in ODI cricket against Afghanistan is a personal best innings in chasing runs. He broke Pakistan’s Fakhr Zaman’s record. Fakhar scored 193 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2021. That was the world record so far. Shane Watson is number three in the list. Watson scored an unbeaten 185 against Bangladesh in 2011 in a run chase. Number four is Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Mahi scored an unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in Jaipur in 2005. In 2012, Virat Kohli scored 183 against Pakistan in Mirpur. He is number five on the list.
England’s Andrew Strauss played the highest innings while chasing runs in the World Cup. Strauss scored 158 against India in Bangalore in 2011 World Cup. Maxwell also broke that record.
This is the highest individual run in ODI cricket by such a batsman who is not an opener. Maxwell topped Zimbabwe’s Charles Coventry. Coventry was unbeaten on 194 against Bangladesh in 2009. Sir Viv Richards had the highest runs in the World Cup among such batsmen who are not openers. He scored 181 against Sri Lanka in Karachi in 1987 World Cup. Maxwell also broke that record. Kapil Dev holds the record for highest innings by any cricketer who has batted six or less in ODI cricket. Kapil’s unbeaten innings of 175 runs against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup is immortalized in the history of cricket. Maxwell also passed that precedent.
Maxwell and Pat Cummins added 202 runs for an unbroken eighth wicket stand against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium. This is the highest run-scoring partnership for seventh or lower in ODI cricket. Maxwell-Cummins surpassed England’s Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid’s partnership of 177 runs in 2015.
Afghans were hit by Maxwell’s bat storm. Australia confirmed the semi-final of the World Cup.
