The opening pair in the current World Cup has become a headache for Bangladesh. In almost every match, the openers returned to the dressing room before the end of the power play. Dealing with this initial shock has an impact on the subsequent batting order.
So there is talk of Tamim Iqbal’s absence. However, coming to the end of the tournament, Shakib Al Hasan is not willing to say anything about this.
An Indian journalist raised the issue of Tamim after the match against Sri Lanka. He questioned whether Bangladesh’s position in the opening pair would have been different if Tamim had been in the World Cup team.
In response, Shakib said, ‘I do not want to comment on this matter. It’s irrelevant to me at the moment.’ Tamim is not included in the World Cup squad due to lack of fitness, which was the official reason given by chief selector Minhajul Abedin during the team announcement.
In the absence of Tamim, Tanjid Hasan got the responsibility of opening the innings along with Liton Das. The opening pair of the two could not shine in any match except the India match. Two openers batted throughout the power play in that one match. Both added 93 runs. In the remaining seven matches, their highest partnership is only 30 runs.
