Bangladesh did not get much good in the opening pair in the current World Cup. In almost every match, the openers returned to the dressing room before the end of the power play. This initial shock is felt in the entire batting order. So the topic of Tamim Iqbal’s absence is coming back. However, at the end of the tournament, Shakib Al Hasan does not want to say anything about this.
Tamim is not in the World Cup squad due to a collective decision of the team management due to lack of fitness, chief selector Minhajul Abedin said while announcing the official reason. Later on this matter was muddied a lot. In the end, Bangladesh went to India to play in the global tournament without Tamim.
In the absence of Tamim, Tanjid Hasan got the responsibility of opening the innings along with Liton Das. Apart from the India match, the opening pair of the two did not meet in any other match. Two openers passed the power play in that one match. Both added 93 runs. In the remaining seven matches, their maximum partnership is only 30 runs.
The Liton-Tanjid first wicket pair have not taken five overs in six of the eight matches played so far. Individual performance of both is not that good. Litton is showing occasional flashes of irregularity. And Tanjid could not score 60 runs in the remaining seven matches except fifty against India.
The condition of Bangladesh is also fragile in such a failed World Cup for the openers. Despite winning the last match against Sri Lanka at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday, the opening pair did not score more than 17 runs. Bangladesh won with the bat of Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib.
After the match, an Indian journalist brought up the subject of Tamim. He asked the question, if Tamim was in the World Cup team, would Bangladesh’s situation be different in the opening pair?
Hearing the question, Shakib said with a small smile, ‘I don’t want to comment on this. It is irrelevant to me in this situation.’
