Kohli became the third Indian batsman after Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma to complete 1000 runs in ODIs in 2023. He is the fourth batsman in the world in this regard. Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nisanka also completed 1000 runs in ODIs this year. With this, Kohli scored 1000 runs eight times in a calendar year. Earlier in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, Kohli scored 1000 runs in ODI cricket.

With Kohli reaching this milestone against Sri Lanka on Thursday, Sachin’s world record was broken. He scored 1000 runs in one-day cricket seven times in a year. Kohli was at the top together with Sachin for so long. On this day he reached the top alone. Sachin achieved this feat in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2007.
