Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered an army mobilization to ‘protect the motherland’. In a televised address on Wednesday, President Putin announced the partial mobilization of Russia’s 300,000-strong military reserve. After Putin’s announcement, sales of one-way tickets in Russia increased, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
After the televised speech early Wednesday morning local time, many feared that men of a certain age would not be allowed to leave Russia.
However, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Putin’s announcement would be limited to those with experience as professional soldiers. Students and those who have worked only as recruits will not be called.
Still, all direct flights from Moscow to Istanbul, Turkey, and Yerevan, Armenia, were sold out on Wednesday, according to Google Trends data from Aviacell, Russia’s most popular site for buying airline tickets. Both of these countries allow Russians to enter without a visa.
Tickets for many other routes, including Moscow to Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, are also sold out. Apart from this, the fare of flights from Moscow to Dubai has also increased almost five times.
Incidentally, in a televised speech early Wednesday morning local time, Putin threatened Western countries, saying that if the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will take all measures to protect Russia and its people. He also warned that it is not a scam.
At that time, Putin announced the partial mobilization of Russia’s 200,000-strong military reserve. He made this announcement to protect Russia and its territories.
As a result of this directive, all reservists who have served or trained in the Russian army will now be called up to fight for any future need for the army.
Vladimir Putin said in a speech that he ordered the mobilization of troops to protect Russia’s motherland, sovereignty, territorial integrity and people’s security. Army rally will start from Wednesday.
Those who want to blackmail us with nuclear weapons, should know that the counter-wind can also be directed at them, he said.
He alleged that Western countries have shown that they do not want peace between Russia and Ukraine.
Putin’s speech comes as Moscow begins to consolidate its grip on Ukrainian territory in the east and south. They are planning to hold a referendum in the liberated areas of Ukraine to formally join Russia.
