In areas of Ukraine that have come under the control of Russian-backed separatist groups and Russian troops, there is a push to hold referendums. This referendum has been organized with the aim of connecting Ukraine’s Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions with Russia. News from Reuters and Al-Jazeera.

Officials appointed by Russia in the Kherson region said on Tuesday that they have decided to hold a referendum on joining Kherson with Russia. The speaker of the Russian parliament spoke in the tone of the leaders of the Kherson separatist group. He said if the people voted to join Russia, he would support it.

Meanwhile, world leaders meeting in New York to attend the UN session condemned Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, as pro-Moscow leaders in four of Ukraine’s occupied territories announced plans to hold referendums on joining Russia in the coming days.

Pro-Moscow leaders have announced September 23-27 referendums in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia provinces, which make up about 15% of Ukraine’s territory.

Russian news agency Tass reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the two regions of Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) as independent states before the start of the “military operation” in Ukraine on February 24. Between September 23 and 27, the Luhansk People’s Republic is holding a referendum to join Russia. Russian-backed separatist groups are organizing the referendum.

One of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s senior security officials said he also supports Moscow-backed separatist proposals to join Russia. This would pave the way for large parts of Ukraine to secede from Ukraine. It will also increase pressure on the West, which supports Kiev.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, “It is up to the people of the region to decide whether to hold a referendum to join Russia or not.” From the beginning we have been saying that the fate of the people of those areas should be determined by themselves.

The Russia-Ukraine war has been going on for seven months. Putin ordered the attack on Ukraine on February 24. However, Moscow refers to it as a ‘military operation’. Russian troops have taken control of one-fifth of Ukraine in the past seven months of war. However, the Ukrainian army has now launched a counterattack. Russian troops have lost control of some areas to Ukrainian troops in the northeastern part of the country. In this situation, Putin is now going to enter the next phase of the war. Meanwhile, separatist leaders of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics agreed to plans for a referendum on joining Russia on Monday.
