Masha Amini: Hijab burning protest in Iran over death of woman in police custody

After the death of a woman in Iran due to violation of hijab law, the mass protests started in that country. The women who participated in it are expressing their anger by burning the hijab.

Protests have been going on in the country for the last five days and the movement is spreading in many towns and cities.

Hundreds of women set fire to their hijabs as part of a protest in Sari, a city north of Tehran.

Masha Amini was arrested in Iran’s capital Tehran last week for violating the hijab law by Iran’s morality police. He fell unconscious shortly after being taken to the detention center. He died last Friday after being in a coma for three days. Since then, there have been massive anti-hijab protests in Iran.

Nada al-Nashif, acting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said Masha Amini was allegedly hit on the head with a baton by police after being detained and slammed into their car.

However, the police denied the allegations of torture against him. They claim that Masha Amini died of heart failure. But Miz Amini’s family said he was perfectly healthy and strong.

Twenty-two-year-old Masha Amini came from Kurdistan in western Iran. There too, three people were killed on Monday when the police opened fire on the protestors.

Miz, an aide to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, met with Amini’s family on Monday.

State media reported that he said, “If rights are violated, all institutions will work to protect them.”

Jalal Rashidi, a senior Iranian politician, has publicly criticized the country’s moral police, saying it was a mistake to create such a police that would only bring harm to Iran.

At least 38 people were injured by riot police firing, rubber bullets and tear gas during protests in Kurdistan on Saturday and Sunday, Hengao, a group that monitors the human rights situation in Kurdistan, said.

Three male protesters were shot dead there, the agency said. Protests are still going on there.

Videos circulating on social media showed women in Tehran throwing off their headscarves and shouting “Death to the dictator” – a slogan commonly used in Iran to refer to the supreme leader.

There are more slogans, ‘We want justice, we want freedom, wearing hijab will not be compulsory.’

A woman who took part in the protest alleged that the police surrounded her and assaulted her with sticks. The police also abused them as sex workers.

Another woman said that when she took off her head hijab and flew, other male activists surrounded her and provided security, which she was very pleased to see. He wants the people of the world to support them in this movement.

However, Tehran Governor Mohsen Mansoori tweeted on Tuesday, “The protestors are on the streets fully organized to create instability.”

Iranian state television has alleged that Miz Amini’s death is being used as an excuse by Kurdistan separatists to criticize the government.
