Four Moscow-controlled regions of Ukraine have announced plans for emergency referendums on joining Russia. This would pave the way for the region’s integration with Russia. News BBC.
Recently, Russian aggression in the country has decreased and Ukraine has regained several parts of the northeast controlled by Russian forces. Russian-backed officials in the country’s east and south say they want a vote on joining Russia this week.
“The vote in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, also known as Donbas, will be corrected by historical justice and will be irreversible,” Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, said on Tuesday (September 20). After the amendment of the constitution, no future leaders and officials of Russia will be able to change this decision.
Soon after, Russian-backed authorities in Donetsk and Luhansk said they would vote on the issue between September 23-27. Three days before the invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Putin recognized the two regions as independent.
Russian-backed officials in the southern region of Kherson said they would also hold a vote. Apart from this, such a claim has also come from Zaporizhia area occupied by Russian forces. Meanwhile, Russian state media reported that residents could vote in person or absent from the center.
Earlier, Russia annexed Crimea through such a referendum in 2014. At that time, world leaders criticized this initiative of Moscow.
