According to a report published in the British newspaper The Guardian on July 14, since the 1990s, there has been increasing concern about ransomware attacks in the public and private sectors. According to UK-based cyber security firm Sophos, the number of ransomware attacks on US healthcare institutions increased by 94 percent from 2021 to 2022.

Costa Rica was also forced to declare a national emergency against ransomware. The Ransomware Task Force (RTF) was formed in April 2021 by 19 security firms, technology companies and non-profit organizations from around the world to combat ransomware.

According to data leaked on the dark web, in 2021 the United States was the victim of 60 percent of ransomware attacks. This was followed by the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, which accounted for 31 percent of attacks. On the other hand, the rate of attacks targeting the Asia Pacific region is 9 percent. However, attacks are increasing in this region. According to Check Point Research, an international organization working on cyber security, the number of cyber attacks in the Asia Pacific region increased by 168 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. India has been the victim of the most ransomware attacks in the region. It is followed by Japan, Thailand, China and Taiwan. According to Kaspersky Security Bulletin 2021 data, Bangladesh suffers more attacks from ransomware Trojan viruses than any other country.
