In the world’s 100 busiest ports, the country’s main seaport Chittagong has moved up three steps to the 64th position in Lloyd’s List.

Lloyd’s List, a London-based shipping media, published the list of 100 ports for 2021 on Thursday (August 18) night as every year. It shows that compared to 2020, Chittagong port has reached the 64th place from the 67th place. However, in the list published in 2021 last year, Chittagong port was 9 steps behind in 2020 compared to the previous year.

Lloyd’s List is the oldest London-based shipping magazine, which annually reviews the operations of the world’s ports and publishes a list of the 100 busiest ports.

According to port sources, Chittagong Port was ranked 86th in Lloyds List in 2014, 87th in 2015, 76th in 2016, 71st in 2017, 70th in 2018, 64th in 2019, and 58th in 2020.

According to Lloyd’s List data, in 2021 Chittagong port handled a total of 32 lakh 14 thousand 548 TEU’s (twenty feet equivalent unit-20 feet equivalent unit) of containers. So that there has been a growth of 13.2 percent compared to the previous year. In 2020, Chittagong port handled 28 lakh 39 thousand 977 TEU’s of containers.

Referring to the position of Chittagong Port this year, Lloyd’s List said, ‘Despite many limitations in terms of capacity, this major seaport of Bangladesh has returned to its original form.’

In this regard, port chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said that the port has seen a percentage increase in container handling last year. It shows that after the corona epidemic, the country’s foreign trade has started to increase again. In 2021, there was no container or vessel congestion at the port. Last year 49 percent of ships received berthing at the port as soon as they arrived. Which has helped the port to achieve such growth. This achievement was possible due to the full cooperation of the port users.

98 percent of the country’s container handling by sea goes through Chittagong port. Remaining at Mongla port.
