Hamas is willing to end the war with Israel if an independent Palestinian state is established with the lands occupied by Israel in the 1967 war.
CNN has reported that some officials of this armed organization in Gaza have given such an indication.
“If an independent state is established, the capital will be Jerusalem,” Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’ political bureau based in Istanbul, told CNN on Thursday. There, refugees’ right of return would be protected, and al-Qassem would be the national armed forces of the future Palestinian state. In that case, Hamas is willing to stop fighting and lay down its arms.”
Palestinians have long demanded an independent Palestinian state comprising the Israeli-occupied West Bank, occupied East Jerusalem and Gaza. In this regard, the President of the Palestinian National Initiative-PNI, Mustafa Barghouti, said that he is not aware of the proposal that Hamas has made regarding giving up arms. But if the news is true, it will be a very significant step, he said.
“This is significant in the sense that the Palestinians are resisting occupation,” he told CNN. Because there is occupation. If there had not been an incident of encroachment, there would have been no question of resistance.”
In this regard, the president of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, Ephraim Anbar, said, “The demand of Palestinian refugees to return to their ancestral home where today’s Israel is founded is very unrealistic. There the Jews are in the majority and it will mean the ‘destruction of the State of Israel’.
He also thinks that Hamas has made this proposal to look good in front of Western countries.
“They see a lot of support for the Palestinians from the Western world,” he said. So they are trying to show that they are good people and Israel is very bad and Israel will say no to this proposal.
“The United States and European countries can tell Israel to give them (Hamas) a chance by showing this. But Israel will treat this good man as a fraud.”
