An Indian-origin female student has been arrested amid anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests at universities across the US.

Arrested Achinthia Sivalingam is a student at Princeton University. NDTV reported on Friday, quoting Student and Alumni newspapers that the police arrested two students from that university.

The Princeton Alumni Weekly reported that protesters set up tents to take up positions on university campuses early Thursday morning. At that time the police arrested Achinthia and Hasan Saeed from there. They are both graduate students.

They were arrested for trespassing, a university spokesperson said, adding that they have been ‘immediately banned from the campus’ and will be subject to disciplinary action.

“They were repeatedly warned by the Public Security Department. They were told to stop their protest activities and leave the area. They were arrested because they did not do that.”

Since last week, protests against the Gaza war have spread from Columbia University in the US to Yale and other universities. The authorities are struggling to control these growing protests.
