Losing in El Clasico effectively ended Barcelona’s La Liga title dreams. The Catalan giants returned from the Santiago Bernabeu losing 3-2 despite going ahead twice. However, after the loss, Barca coach Xavi Hernandez reacted angrily to the lack of goal line technology in La Liga. He claimed that Barca was the victim of injustice.
The match was tied at 1-1. Barca had a chance to go ahead in the 28th minute. Lamine Yamal’s back flick from the corner was blocked from the goal line by Real Madrid goalkeeper Andre Lunin. Even if the referee did not blow the goal whistle, the Barca players continued to apply for the goal. But there is no goal line technology in La Liga. So after looking at VAR, the referee decided that the ball did not cross the goal line.
The Barca players continued to raise their anger on the field. At the end of the match Xavi said, “It’s uncomfortable not to have goal-line technology (in a tournament like La Liga). This technology is needed to make it the best league in the world.’
Xavi also thinks that Barca have been wronged because of the lack of goal-line technology, ‘Everyone saw what happened. What else can I say? The league authorities can punish me for that. But the picture is there. Today it seems that we have been completely wronged. I said before the match, I hope the referee will give the right decision. But that didn’t happen. But we played very well. We should have got three points.’
England’s Premier League, even second division football, has goal-line technology. But tournaments like La Liga do not have this technology. Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter-Stegen could not keep quiet about this because he is a goalkeeper himself. He said with anger, ‘What happened on the goal line, there are no words to say. It’s bad for football. Money is poured in here, but not for one important thing. While this technology exists in other leagues, I don’t understand why we don’t have it here.’
