VICTORIA: Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) retained its status as the world’s busiest cargo airport last year, while the US hub experienced the biggest decline among the world’s top air cargo hubs.
Airports Council International (ACI) reported that Hong Kong International Airport’s cargo volume increased by 3.3% to 4.3 million tonnes compared to last year.
London’s Air Cargo News noted that this marks the 13th time since 2010 that Hong Kong International Airport has become the world’s busiest cargo airport, but is still below 2019 levels, when the airport handled 4.8 million tonnes, as last year’s passengers were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The airport lost its top spot in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and related decline in passenger flights.

Looking ahead, the airport said its cargo capacity will reach 10 million tonnes when the three-runway system is commissioned later this year.
At the same time, it is also investing in high-value and fast-growing segments like e-commerce. Last year, Hong Kong International Airport completed the Cainiao Smart Gateway, developed by Alibaba Group’s logistics arm, and the expansion of DHL’s Central Asia hub, increasing capacity by 50%.
