Google AI project helps military in disaster response

Peter Diamandis, founder and executive chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation, discusses the pros and cons of artificial intelligence in “The Claman Countdown.”

one Artificial Intelligence (AI) Companies backed by Google are working with the military to use artificial intelligence to respond to natural disasters.

Bellwether’s team, part of Google parent company Alphabet’s X Innovation Center, announced Wednesday that it is working with national guard and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to address inefficiencies in the National Guard’s disaster response process. DIU’s mission is to help the Department of Defense integrate early-stage commercial technologies into its operations.

Bellweather worked with the National Guard to develop a system that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) to rapidly analyze aerial imagery of disaster scenarios to identify damage to critical infrastructure. This can then inform the National Guard to coordinate disaster response as they seek to deploy resources most effectively after assessing the damage.

The National Guard currently conducts manual damage assessments, with people looking at aerial images of affected areas and comparing them to corresponding photos of those locations to document the infrastructure changes caused by the disaster. As this process continues as the disaster progresses and it takes time to review these details, the initial response may be delayed.

“Currently, our analysts must spend time sorting through imagery to find the areas most affected by natural disasters,” Col. Brian McGarry, who directs the National Guard’s Operations, Planning and Training Branch, said in a statement.

“They need to correlate these images with the surrounding infrastructure, identifying all relevant features, and only then can significant damage be highlighted and sent to first responder teams.”

“Using artificial intelligence and machine learning will speed up routine tasks like geocoding, identification and tagging so we can get critical information to those who need it most,” McGarry wrote, “saving lives in our communities.”

After analyzing images of the disaster scene, Bellweather equipment creates labeled maps of the affected area, allowing the National Guard to quickly determine how to deploy resources to respond to the situation. affected area.

“Information about the world comes from many sources,” said Sarah Russell, a leader in disaster response organizations and other organizations that can use it to make better decisions and plan for the future.

“As natural disasters continue to occur and worsen in intensity, DIU supports our mission to create the most effective tools possible,” added Russell “Five years from now, no one will have to wait to understand the extent of extreme weather and community damage. The most urgent need is for us to immediately understand the state of the most critical infrastructure across the region and what should be considered reasonable and expected next steps.

Google said Bellwether’s findings are so encouraging for DIU that it is working with the team on future disaster response efforts.

Google’s X Innovation Center Also noted in a separate article, Bellweather is developing a wildfire forecasting tool to calculate fire risk for landscapes and structures over the next five years.

The tool estimates the likelihood of a wildfire occurring at a location by analyzing historical data about the environment and risk drivers such as tree species, air quality, and the type of infrastructure in the area.
