Everyone is used to seeing Mahendra Singh Dhoni with a cool head. Baishgaje likes to stay ‘cool’ in any situation. But some have also seen Dhoni’s anger. His long-time teammate Suresh Raina said in an interview what a terrifying form he can take when he gets angry.
Suresh Raina has played with Dhoni in IPL since 2008 in Chennai. The former batsman spoke openly about Dhoni in an interview recently.
Chennai did not reach the final after losing to Punjab Kings in the second qualifier in 2014. Virender Sehwag went to bat first and scored a century. Chasing 227 runs, Chennai started well but could not win in the end. Dhoni could not accept the defeat of the team that day. Go back to the dressing room and lose your temper.
Raina said in an interview, ‘I have never seen Dhoni so angry. He was blowing. He threw his helmet and pads in anger. Dhoni talked to everyone a little longer that day. He was saying, we could have won this match. We shouldn’t have lost. If we had won that match, we would have won the Sebar IPL as well. That was on Dhoni’s mind. So he could not take that loss.’
The 2020 IPL was held in the UAE amid the Covid pandemic. There the cricketers had to stay within the biological protection zone. After going to the Emirates, Raina returned to India before the start of the tournament. Initially, there were speculations that Raina did not like the hotel room. So he came back. He also had a dispute with Dhoni. However, it was later heard that some members of Raina’s family were killed by miscreants. So Raina came back in a hurry.
Raina also opened up about that. He said, ‘Three members of my uncle’s family were killed. In Pathankot, miscreants killed entire families. But then I could not return. Due to covid there were many rules. Had to stay in biofort for 15 days. So I came back to the country as soon as I got the chance. At that time I wanted to be with my family. I told Dhoni everything. He supported my decision.’
It should be noted that Raina played for Chennai from 2008 to 2021. Being exiled to Chennai for two years, he played for the then Gujarat Lions. Raina has played 205 matches in IPL. Scored 5528 runs. The left-handed batsman has won four IPLs for Chennai.
