Pune: Bangladesh ended a disappointing World Cup (ODI World Cup 2023) campaign with defeat. Bangladesh team without Shakib put up 306 runs against Australia (AUS vs BAN) in Pune. It was expected that the match would be a close fight. However, the Bangladeshi bowlers practically flew away in Mitchell Marsh’s storm. Marsh played an unbeaten innings of 177 runs off 132 balls. Two Oji superstars David Warner and Steve Smith also scored fifties. As a result, Australia won the match by eight wickets with 32 balls to spare. Marsh-Smith ensured Australia’s victory with a partnership of 175 runs for the third wicket.
Taskin Amed with the ball did not start badly for Bangladesh. Taskin returned Travis Head for just 10 runs. Bangladesh lost the first wicket by 12 runs. But Mitchell Marsh and Warner led the innings for Australia. The two made a partnership of 122 runs for the second wicket. Australia crossed the hundred mark in just 15 overs. Warner scored a half-century. But he could not go far after half a century. He was dismissed for 53 runs by Mustafizur Rahman.
In this situation, there was a hope of returning to the Bangladesh match. But experienced batsman Smith and in-form Marsh extinguished those hopes. Australia crossed the 200-run mark in 31.4 overs. The victory was confirmed by Australia. Marsh scored his second century in the current World Cup. He hit 17 fours and nine sixes. Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 63 runs.
With this victory, Australia finished the group stage at number three with a total of 14 points from nine matches. They finished third as they were behind South Africa in net run rate. Pat Cummins has only lost against India and the Proteas. Pat Cummins will play against South Africa at Eden Gardens on November 16 with the aim of reaching the final.
