Savar (Dhaka): The labor leaders of industrial areas Savar and Ashulia have commented on fixing the minimum wage of Tk 12,500 as ‘good for evil’.
Four labor leaders commented on the decision made by the wage board on Tuesday (November 7) afternoon.
Central Committee President of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation Rafiqul Islam Sujan told BanglaNews that the minimum wage proposal that has been given now is a good thing for the workers. We will appeal the matter so that the wages are increased further considering the current market conditions. Another thing is that whatever wages are fixed for the workers should be implemented in all garment factories.
Sarwar Hossain, General Secretary of Garments Sramik Oikya League, told Banglanews that the wage structure decided by the Fifth Wage Board today is bad for the workers. This fixed wage of Tk 12,500 will be effective from next January. Our labor leaders applied to the wage board for Rs.20,000. After that application, 12 and a half thousand taka was made. Which has been increased by more than 4 thousand rupees compared to the last wage. We want the rationing of workers and request the government to ensure that house rents are not suddenly increased by landlords.
Garment Workers Trade Union organizing secretary Khairul Mamun Mintu told Banglanews that the minimum wage of garment workers has been set at Tk 12,500 in the fifth meeting on Tuesday. That is, the proposals of the owners have been accepted. The wages that were fixed did not actually reflect the aspirations of the workers. The way current market rates have gone up is very inadequate for a worker at this wage.
President of Bangladesh Garments Industrial Workers Federation (Savar, Ashulia and Dhamrai). Ibrahim said, I like the decision taken by the government for the workers in a quick time. In the current market conditions, workers will find it difficult to survive on this wage, but Kana Mama is much better than Nai Mama. Some workers may not accept this wage and some workers will gladly accept it.
Incidentally, the wage board decided the minimum salary of Tk 12,500 in the fifth meeting urgently amid the movement of garment workers in the last few days.
