Dhaka: A two-day general holiday has been declared at the Epilion Knitwears Limited factory at Pallabi in the capital. Considering the overall situation of the factory, the authorities have given a notice to declare a general holiday from November 1 to 2.
31 October is mentioned as the date of issue of notice.
Epilion Knitwears Limited has announced a two-day holiday in the factory amid the protests of garment workers in Mirpur area based on the wage hike movement.
Garment workers protested by blocking the road on Wednesday (November 1) from 8:00 a.m. to demand an increase in wages and justice for the attack on the workers.
The workers said the attack was led by a local influential man who broke into a factory in Epilion on Tuesday morning. The workers again came down on the road from Wednesday morning to bring the attackers to justice and other demands.
A worker representative of Epilion Knitwears Limited said on condition of anonymity that they will not leave the road until their demands are met. The police have not taken any action against the attackers so far. So they are protesting.
Sumaiya Akhtar, another labor representative, said that the incident started yesterday morning with the detention of the employees of Epilion factory in Pallavi. Epilion workers were not allowed to leave for fear that they might join the movement of workers in other factories. In the vicinity of the factory, the followers of local influential people with sticks were threatening the workers. At first, they had an argument with the employees of Epilion. Because of this, they attacked the garment workers.
Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahfuzur Rahman said that garment workers have been protesting on the road since Wednesday morning. Trying to control the situation by talking to them.
