
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated three projects built by India-Bangladesh joint venture. On Wednesday, the two Prime Ministers inaugurated the railway line connecting Phultala to Mangala port in Khulna, Agartala railway line from Akhaura border and unit number two of Bangladesh’s largest thermal power project ‘Maitri’ on Wednesday.
In the inauguration program, Modi said that India considers Bangladesh as a reliable friend in the geopolitical situation. Regarding his participation in the inauguration of three projects with Hasina, he said, “It is a matter of happiness that we have been able to collaborate again around development programs.” On the other hand, Bangladesh Prime Minister Hasina spoke about intensifying bilateral cooperation in a video conference speech.

The 65 km long Phultala-Mangla and 15 km long Akhaura-Agartala railway lines will make transportation of goods from Kolkata to Northeast India much faster (using Bangladesh railways). India-Bangladesh MoU was signed on 16 February 2013 during Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister for the establishment of Akhaura-Agartala rail link. Initially, the 15 km railway line was supposed to be constructed within three years, but the pace of work slowed down after the change of power in Delhi in 2014.
