Suparna Majumder: SI Savitri Mandal. Gazitala police station. Amni is soft-spoken at times, but doesn’t hesitate to slap him flat behind the ear when he sees a begtik. Director Indranil Roychowdhury has shown such a flesh and blood character in the ‘Chhotlok’ series. He has gambled on that. Almost everyone in the rest of the cast is fluent. But Damini Beni Basu! Bengali needs more movies and serials for such actors.
Be it ‘Grasshopper’ or ‘Mayar Janjal’, Indranil Roychowdhury’s work means something exceptional. It was not different in the case of ‘Chhotolok’ (Chhotolok Series). Indranil and Sugat arranged the story through different layers of time. The collage of the first few shots is mind-blowing. Then a murder. Rising model and actress Rupsar Khun. The name of Raja, son of Sitahati municipality chairperson Mohar Bhattacharya, got involved in it. It is known that Raja developed a love relationship with Rupsa despite being married to Mallika.

So the king killed Rupsa? Or is there another story behind it? It would be a mistake to think of the story as a mere murder. In each episode, the director has brought the present to the stage of the past. And that’s why the interest increased. Here police does not mean ‘Dabangg’ or ‘Singham’. Police here are flesh and blood people like me and you. Those who love to eat churumur when they have time, sit looking for antacids in between interrogations, take the bazaar home at the end of the day’s duty, think about whether the girl has come out of the bathroom or not – such is life and his life.
I like Priyanka Sarkar’s calm yet sharp performance as Mallika. Gaurav is fluent in the role of Raja. Ushasi Roy as Rupsa is disturbingly cute. Indrani Halder has portrayed the conflict of being a politician on the one hand and a helpless mother on the other in front of the camera. Debesh Chattopadhyay, Ushshi Chakraborty, Loknath Dey, Subhrajit Dutta have given worthy accompaniment as side characters. But Damini, he could not be compared with anyone. She has become Savitri Mandal in her own right. And literally like Savitri’s ‘Watson’ Jamil. Pratik Dutt in this role is in one word perfect. Yes, the pace of the story felt sluggish at a few places, but Zee5 web platform’s ‘Chhotlok’ will remain at the top of the list of favorite Bengali web series.
