Mayor of Barisal City Corporation (BCC) and General Secretary of Metropolitan Awami League, Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah commented that as part of a conspiracy to discredit the government in the upcoming elections, the electricity connection of roads and water pumps of Barisal city has been disconnected.
He said this in the press conference held on Wednesday night in Barisal city after disconnection of road and water power lines due to outstanding electricity bills to the West Zone Power Distribution Company (Ozopadico).
He said that a few days ago, a large amount of electricity bill was paid. However, all street lights and water pumps in the city were disconnected without notice. So that the city dwellers suffer. Because the election is a year later. I think as part of the conspiracy Ozopadiko cut the road and water power lines. This will bring bad name to Awami League government. They did that.
Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah blamed the mayors of the previous term for the arrears of electricity bills and said that during the time of former mayor Shaukat Hossain Hiran, the electricity bill was arrears of Tk 20 crore 36 lakh 73 thousand 15. He did not pay a single rupee. During the tenure of former mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal, the outstanding amount was 21 crore 74 lakh 55 thousand 939 taka. Out of this, one crore 33 lakh 28 thousand 122 taka has been paid. 15 crore 8 lakh 48 thousand 195 rupees due during my tenure. I have already paid 1 crore 73 lakh 70 thousand 207 taka. My electricity line is being cut off despite regular bill payments.
Expressing his anger, the mayor also said, “I will not pay the outstanding bills of the former mayors.” It found this place without being able to attack me in any way.
Mayor also said, I told our guardian Abul Hasanat Abdullah. That will be the decision he takes after talking to the Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, on Thursday morning, Ojopadico Barisal Division Assistant Engineer Nurul Islam Biswas said that a total of 59 crore 94 lakh 16 thousand 943 Tk is owed to the City Corporation. We have given them repeated notices. Now I am forced to disconnect the line on the orders of the ministry.
It is to be noted that Barisal city has now turned into a ghost town after the power cut three days ago. Along with that, there is a water crisis in the city.
