The West Zone Power Distribution Company (Ojopadico) has cut off the electricity connection to street lights and water lines in the city due to the outstanding electricity bill of around Tk 49 crore to the Barisal City Corporation (BCC). The roads of 30 wards of the city have become lightless. The city dwellers are suffering.
According to City Corporation sources, on September 15, City Corporation paid Tk 78 lakh of electricity bill to Ojopadiko. And on September 18, they disconnected the power lines of all the roads in the city. Due to lack of light on the important roads of 30 wards, the city dwellers are suffering.
On the other hand, Ojopadico sources said that the last bill payment date was September 18. But due to non-payment of the bill even within the stipulated time, the street lamp line has to be disconnected.
Nurul Islam Biswas, assistant engineer of Barisal management and conservation circle of Ojopadico, told Daily Education.com that the city corporation has not paid the electricity bill for almost 10 years. They are under pressure from the ministry due to Tk 50 crore electricity bill arrears. Finally, the city corporation has to start the operation of disconnecting the electricity of the street lights.
ATM Tariqul Islam, Supervising Engineer of Management and Conservation Circle said, numerous letters have been sent to BCC for payment of dues. But they did not respond as expected. The last payment date was 18 September. But they did not pay it even in the next scheduled time. As a result, the street light line has to be cut off by raiding.
Swapan Kumar Das, administrative officer of Barisal City Corporation, told our daily Our Barta that why they did this and with whose permission, I cannot say. We have not been told anything. Suddenly they disconnected the street lights and water supply.
