The construction of a full-fledged agricultural research center in Gopalganj is at the final stage

Tungipara (Gopalganj), September 21, 2022 (BSS): The construction of a full-fledged agricultural research center of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute at Gopalganj is in the final stage. This center will be inaugurated in March next year. It is being built with the aim of creating a working environment for national and international researchers interested in working on agricultural diversity as well as floating agriculture, diverse crop cultivation in submerged semi-saline land in the South-Western region. This center will play a major role in the development of farmers and agriculture in the south-western region through research.
The Ministry of Agriculture has adopted a 5-year agricultural development project by establishing an agricultural research center of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute in Gopalganj district and strengthening environmental friendly research programs in the southwestern region of the country.
Under that project, the construction work of the research center started in 2020 at a cost of Tk 146 crore 57 lakh on 20 acres of land in Ghonapara near Gopalganj district city.
Research center project director. MM Kamruzzaman said that the acquisition of 20 acres of land, cutting of soil, filling of soil, construction of electricity substation, and transmission of electricity supply lines have been completed. Besides, field equipment, office equipment, furniture, cars and motorcycles have been purchased. 75% of the construction of office cum lab building of the center and 50% of the extension building, have been completed. The construction work of staff accommodation building, workers shed, overhead tacking and boundary wall is progressing at a fast pace. Construction of 3 thousand 600 square meter RCC road and installation of 3 elevators in office cum lab building inside the center has started. We have started the purchase of lab equipment.
The project director said that this project started in 2018. This project will end on June 30 next year. The construction of Gopalganj Agricultural Research Center will be completed at the beginning of 2023. It is hoped that the center will be inaugurated in March of that year. Work is progressing towards that goal.
Research center project director. MM Kamruzzaman also said that agriculture and farmers of this region are under threat due to climate change. The main objective of this project is the agricultural development of 38 upazilas in 5 districts of the three divisions of the southwestern region.
The project director said that the full-fledged agricultural research center will strengthen research activities for the development of agriculture, invent new technologies, produce and supply quality seeds, verify the utility and potential of new varieties of crops, fruits, vegetables, pulses, potatoes, oil seeds, wheat, corn, coconut, Increase in palm and dates production will greatly contribute to the increase in farmers’ income. Here university students, national and international researchers are being created working environment. This full-fledged agricultural research center is being developed as an institution of international standards. There will be a rest house and restaurant of international standard. It will be made a tourist spot within the district of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Recently, the Minister of Agriculture Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak visited Gopalganj Agricultural Research Center under construction. Meanwhile, the minister inquired about the progress of the construction work of the center. Later he advised to complete the construction work quickly. Officials of the Ministry of Agriculture, Agricultural Research, Nuclear Agricultural Research, Agricultural Extension, Rice Research Institute, scientists and district Awami League leaders were present.
