Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen termed Myanmar’s recent mortar shelling inside Bangladesh as an ‘unintentional mistake’.
He said this at a press conference on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tour schedule at the 77th UNGA at Hotel Lotte in New York.
The Foreign Minister said that the Myanmar authorities have informed that they are not firing at the territory of Bangladesh.
He said, ‘The border area of that area is very crisscrossed. Sometimes it becomes difficult to understand the border…, that’s why they are not deliberately firing inside our border, the one or two shells that are falling inside our border are falling by mistake.’
He also said that the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh has summoned the Myanmar ambassador and the Myanmar authorities have promised us that they will be vigilant.
Bangladesh has sealed the entire border and will not allow any new Rohingya to enter Bangladesh, Momen said.
“We are now in a very strong position, we have sealed our border so that no new Rohingya can enter Bangladesh,” he said.
He also mentioned that some new Rohingyas have already moved to the Chinese area and did not dare to come towards us.
He expressed hope that the displaced Rohingyas staying in Bangladesh will return to their homeland.
