Russian oil cannot be refined in the country

It is not possible to refine Russian Ural crude oil (crude fuel oil) at Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL) in Bangladesh. ERL informed the Petroleum Corporation (BPC) of this information in a report on Tuesday. BPC Chairman ABM Azad confirmed this information.

Bangladesh imports Arabian light crude oil from Saudi Arabia and Markan crude oil from United Arab Emirates. Bangladesh brings 1.5 million tons of crude oil annually. Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the price of energy products has increased several times in the world market. The government claims that BPC is making losses by selling imported oil. So Bangladesh is looking for various sources to buy oil at affordable prices.

On the other hand, because of the war, the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union imposed restrictions on the import of petroleum products from Russia. To capture the market, Russia now takes the initiative to supply crude oil to Asian and African countries at a lower price than the world market. China and India have seized this opportunity. They increased crude oil imports from Russia. Moscow also made such an offer to Dhaka.

A Russian state-owned company sent 50 liters of Ural crude samples to Dhaka early this month. It is then taken to ERL’s lab for testing. ERL constituted a committee of 5 members. They conducted various experiments and said that it is not possible to refine Russian crude in ERL’s refinery.
