9 percent of children in three wards of Rajshahi City Corporation (RASIK) are suffering from malnutrition. On Tuesday, the results of the nutrition assessment program for children under five years of age in three selected wards of Rajshahi metropolis were released. This information of malnourished children has emerged. This result was announced in a press conference organized on this occasion at Sarit Dattagupta meeting room of Nagar Bhavan at noon.
The results were released on Tuesday after conducting this nutrition assessment program under the Urban Public Health System Strengthening Project funded by the US CDC and with the technical assistance of Save the Children, Bangladesh under the supervision of the Rajshahi City Corporation under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. Rasik Chief Health Officer Dr FAM Anjuman Ara Begum was present in it. Dr. Tamanna Basar, Public Health Pathologist of Save the Children and Rajshahi City Corporation, presented the results of the children’s nutrition assessment program at the press conference.
Dr. Tamanna Basar said that the project is being implemented in all the city corporations of the country, which is playing a helpful role in the implementation of public health related activities. Under this project, a 52-day malnutrition screening and nutrition pack distribution campaign was conducted in wards 7, 15 and 27 of Rajshahi City Corporation on the topic of ‘Malnutrition Verification and Nutrition Pack Distribution Programme’. As part of the campaign, from April 24 to July 7, posters and leaflets were distributed in those three wards to check malnutrition, distribute nutrition packs, and increase public awareness. He also said that by analyzing the data obtained from the campaign, it can be seen that 9 percent of the total population of children in the slum area of ​​those three wards out of a total of 3 thousand 184 participants are suffering from malnutrition. There, male children are more malnourished than female children.
Under the programme, proper weight and height verification of 3 thousand 184 children of the metropolis, awareness about what is malnutrition, complementary foods and how much food should be consumed at what age and 24 thousand 750 nutrition packs are provided to malnourished children. Through this campaign, age-appropriate screening and nutrition cards are distributed to children between the ages of four months and five years.
The press conference was also attended by City Hospital (Residential) Medical Officer Dr. Tariqul Islam Boni, Medical Officer Dr. Amina Ferdous and Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Farhad Uddin.
