More than a dozen people, including 6 children, have been killed in a junta government helicopter attack on a village school in Myanmar. At least 17 people were injured in this incident.
German-based media outlet Deutsche Welle reported that the attack and casualties occurred on Friday. But it was published yesterday Monday (September 19). The incident was revealed by an administrator and office assistant of the school where the junta attacked.
The incident took place in Let Yat Kon village in central Sagaing region of north-central Myanmar. The school administrator told news agency AP that the shots were fired from a government Mi-35 gunship helicopter. Children’s classes were going on at that time. We were trying to protect them. But that didn’t happen. 6 people died.
He said that the students did not do anything wrong. I could not imagine that they would be mercilessly fired at with machine guns. The shooting took place for an hour. The helicopter men did not stop for a minute. All we could do was chant Buddhist mantras.
After the incident, state media reported that there were insurgents in the facility that was attacked. They were using the school building to attack the military. 20 students and teachers were detained.
Government forces claimed that they went to inspect the village of Let Yate to confirm the position of the People’s Defense Force (PDF). This organization carries out terrorist activities in Myanmar. PDF forces, including members of its affiliate Kachin Independence Army (KIA), were holed up in the school. When government security forces opened fire, they retaliated.
The junta government did not give any information about the victims of the helicopter attack. However, some have admitted to being injured. The junta claims that the PDF and KIA have used villagers as human shields in late 2011.
In a statement, the army said that 16 hand-made bombs were seized from the school and various houses in the village.
Myanmar’s anti-junta shadow government National Unity Government (NAG) condemned the incident. In a statement, the organization said, the junta is killing innocent civilians to maintain its power. Nag also demanded the immediate release of those arrested.
