District BNP General Secretary Saidur Rahman Bachchu along with the top five leaders of the party were arrested from Dhaka by Sirajganj DB Police.
A team of Sirajganj DB Police arrested them from a house in Dhaka’s Shyamoli area on Friday (September 9) evening. District BNP Joint General Secretary Harun Or Rashid Khan Hasan confirmed this information.
Other arrested leaders are vice-president Amar Krishna Das, adviser Rashed Kabir Chandu, joint-editor Shamim Khan and organizing secretary Abu Saeed Sweet.
District BNP president former member of parliament Rumana Mahmud condemned the arrest and issued a statement demanding the release of the leaders.
BNP leaders and workers were seen posting on social media Facebook protesting the arrest.
After 11 pm on Friday DB Police SI Mehdi Hasan informed about the arrest of BNP leaders.
He said that the arrested leaders are accused in the case filed for obstruction of government work, assault and beating on the police.
On the occasion of the foundation anniversary of BNP, on September 1, a rally was held at Municipal Auditorium Square on EB Road in the city. Towards the end of the rally, BNP leaders and activists clashed with the police. The police have filed a case against 120 BNP activists in that incident.
