The gharial couple’s family has accumulated, now waiting for a new guest

Five years ago, two gharials were paired at the Shaheed Kamaruzzaman Central Park and Zoo in Rajshahi. The female gharial was expected to lay eggs. Through this, this endangered animal will be propagated. For this reason, an environment suitable for the breeding of gharials is created in Rajshahi Central Park. Authorities also create an environment for egg laying. It has already laid eggs. But the baby could not hatch.

Still, the park authorities did not give up hope. They hope that the new guest will come to the Gharial couple’s house very soon. For this reason, the authorities have taken the initiative to change the Gharial’s accommodation.

According to related sources, two gharials have been living in Rajshahi Central Park since about 35 years ago. However, as both were female at the time, there was no hope of reproduction. A female gharial here was taken to Dhaka in August 2017 keeping in mind the issue of propagation. On the other hand, a male gharial was brought from Dhaka Zoo to Rajshahi. The next image is hopeful. Within a few days, male and female gharials develop feelings of love. Seeing their crossing (meeting) the gardeners are full of hope.

Rajshahi Shahid Kamaruzzaman Central Park and Zoo Officer-in-Charge Dr. Farhad Hossain said, ‘The female gharial has laid eggs at least twice in these five years after mating. But the baby did not hatch. However, it has been confirmed that gharials cover their eggs by burrowing after laying. The pond where the gharials live in the Rajshahi zoo had no provision to keep the eggs in a hole after laying. For that reason, sand has been put in the middle of the pond a little above the water level. Generally the breeding season of Gharials is from December to January.

Farhad Hossain said, ‘The female gharial is caught from the Padma river when it is young. Since then she has not had the company of a male gharial. Moreover, the male gharial that was brought from Dhaka was never accompanied by a female gharial. As a result, it took a long time for them to get along. We took the step to make the two gharials blend together.’

‘Earlier two people were given food in two places. Now gradually food is given together. As a result, they become roughly a match. Gharials used to live on either side of two ponds. We also doubt if they fight over it. But now they have a match. Now they walk as a pair.’

Dr. Gharial said that the work is ongoing to bring new guests to the house. Farhad said, ‘Some work will be done in the clock cage. I have given a new design. Accordingly, we have explained to the architect by throwing sand inside. Next to the sand that is placed in the round area, I will make a quarter of the sand again.’

The female gharial lays eggs once a year, he said, ‘We found eggs twice. I got three or four. They rest on the sand. In fact, it is supposed to cover 8-10 inches of sand with naturally beaten eggs. But it lays its eggs in water. Not lying in the sand. For this, I will make a bed of one-fourth of sand. They lay eggs in January-February. When it rises in the sand, I will stick it there. If the eggs can be laid in the sand, we will cover them with sand or in an incubator to hatch the babies.’

Dr. Farhad Hossain said, ‘I think we will be successful only if we can lay the egg in the sand. Which is now giving way to water. The eggs float when they fall. Can’t understand before. If the sand bed is made, I will try to keep it there. It is positive that they are laying eggs. We are optimistic about Gharial getting new guests.’
