Dhaka, September 9, 2022 (BASS) : A meeting of the Steering Committee of the project entitled Phytosanitary Trade Compliance in Bangladesh by APARI, USDA and USAID was held at a local hotel in Dhaka with the aim of establishing a self-sufficient plant protection authority at the national level.
Members of the committee also held discussions with members of the Intergovernmental Committee of Plant Quarantine Facilities (ICPQF) on the same issue.
To establish a National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) in Bangladesh, members emphasized an integrated management system between DAE, MOA as well as Ministry of Commerce and all relevant public and private stakeholders at the institutional level. If Bangladesh comes forward to strengthen its NPPO, it will be possible to maintain the international norms of WTO-SPS. In order to increase the trade of agricultural products in the United States and the global market, according to the SPS agreement executed with the WTO, Bangladesh has to follow the specific policies or standards of the WTO, the negotiators in the meeting expressed their opinion.

Abdus Salam, Director PQW Dr. Syed Md. Rafiqul Amin and director in charge. PPW DAE Md. Emdad Hossain Sheikh, Dr. SN Sushil Pradhan Principal Scientist and former Plant Protection Adviser to Gov. of India Mr. Michael J. Per Bangladesh Trade Facilitation Project, Land O’Lakes, Project Management Specialist Mehdi Hasan USAID, USDA FAS Tanveer Ahmed, former DG of DA Md. Asadul¬ah, SPS Bangladesh Project Coordinator Dr. Ahsan Ullah and senior officials of DAE, MOA were present in the meeting.
Earlier, this week, the executive secretary of APAARIA. Ravi Khetarpal, Minister of Agriculture. Muhammad met Abdur Razzaq. APAARI representative highlighted the need to establish a National Phytosanitary Authority in Bangladesh along with the USDA FAS support program for the development of agricultural trade in Bangladesh, discussing how to increase agricultural trade in Bangladesh in accordance with the WTO-SPS agreement.
