Tungipara (Gopalganj), September 9, 2022 (BASS): First success has been achieved at the field level in summer tomato cultivation in Gopalganj.
This success has come under the supervision of Gopalganj Surface Research Department of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Through this, there is a bright prospect of profitable summer tomato cultivation in this district. By increasing the production of this tomato, the farmers of the district can be more profitable besides increasing the agricultural production.
According to Gopalganj field research department office, in the current season, three utility plots of summer tomatoes were done in Tungipara, Gopalganj Sadar and Muksudpur upazilas of the district. To verify the usefulness of Bari Hybrid Tomato-4, Bari Hybrid Tomato-8, Bari Hybrid Tomato-10, Bari Hybrid Tomato-11 varieties developed by Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute under the project titled Adaptation Test, Production and Community Based Pilot Production Program of Summer Tomato in Bangladesh. is All these four varieties have given bumper yield in Gopalganj utility test.
Abdullah Molla, a farmer of Nilfa village of Tungipara upazila, said that we have been given free seeds, fertilizers and fungicides by the Agricultural Research Institute. Besides, they have given all kinds of advice, support and cost of tomato cultivation. Senior scientific officers and assistants visited the field regularly. They sometimes tended the fields themselves. Under their close supervision I was able to grow these tomatoes.
He said, I put tomato seeds under the first seed. After sprouting, 25-day-old tomato seedlings were picked from the seed bed and planted in 10 percent of the land on July 7. I got tomato yield after only 2 months of planting. Tomatoes are ripening every day. I am collecting tomatoes from here and selling them in the market. We are selling tomatoes wholesale at 60 taka per kg. Expecting to get 4 and a half tomato yield per cent.
Shahjahan Molla, a farmer of the same village, said that summer tomatoes require a lot of maintenance. Tomatoes should be grown by hand. This tomato is sold in the market for three times more than conventional vegetables. It is a high value crop. Summer tomato cultivation is more profitable. So next season I will grow tomatoes. Seeing Abdullah’s tomato field, many people are showing interest in this tomato cultivation.
Senior scientific officer of Gopalganj surface research department of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Mohsin Hawladar said, starting from seeds to summer tomato cultivation project, all kinds of support to the farmers have been provided free of cost. We also tried intensively. In the birthplace of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, I finally succeeded in summer tomato cultivation. This is one of our major breakthroughs in field research. 3 thousand 500 rupees were spent on summer tomato cultivation per cent. 4.5 per cent tomatoes will be produced. This tomato will be sold for 10 thousand 500 taka. The farmer’s profit per cent will be 7 thousand rupees excluding expenses. There is a huge demand for summer tomatoes in our country. Therefore, the government has emphasized on producing more tomatoes in the country by reducing the import dependence of this tomato. If the cultivation of this tomato increases, the agricultural production will increase. Farmers will also benefit.
Deputy Director of Gopalganj Agricultural Extension Department. Arvind Kumar Roy said, We are proud of this success of Agricultural Research Institute in field research in Gopalganj. We will extend this success to them. I will deliver to the farmer. Farmers will be encouraged to cultivate summer tomatoes. Profitable summer tomato cultivation will be expanded in this district next year. This is good news for our agriculture.
