In Rangpur’s Gangachra, BNP leaders and activists clashed with the police and more than half a hundred were injured. The injured have been admitted to Gangachara Upazila Health Complex and Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
The incident took place at the old Sonali Bank junction of the upazila on Thursday (September 8) afternoon.
According to the police and locals, the BNP called for a protest program in the afternoon to protest against the increase in commodity prices, including the killing of Juba Dal leader Shaon in Narayanganj. From 3:30 in the afternoon, the party leaders started gathering at the old Sonali Bank Mor area of the upazila. Then after 4:30 pm, when the activists wanted to go towards Gangachara market with the procession, the police stopped them. When they threw bricks at the police, the police lathi-charged them. Gangachra police station OC Dulal Hossain and more than half a hundred were injured in this incident. Police threw tearcells to control the situation.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (A Circle) Hossain Raihan said, now the situation is calm. Additional police have been deployed in Gangachara Bazar area. Further legal action will be taken after discussing this matter with senior officials.
