Chittagong: 17 candidates of Awami League have submitted their nomination papers for the post of chairman in the Zilla Parishad elections.
The names of the candidates will be announced at the Nomination Board meeting on Saturday (September 10).
The Election Commission announced the schedule for the Zilla Parishad elections on August 23. As per the announced schedule, submission of nomination papers by September 15, selection on September 18, appeals against selection of nomination papers will be disposed of between September 19 to 21 and September 22 to 24. Last date for withdrawal of candidature is September 25. Symbols will be allotted on September 26 and voting will be held on October 17.
Distribution of nomination papers started from last September 4 at Dhanmondi office of Awami League President. Bangladesh Awami League Office Secretary and Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Barrister Biplab Barua said that the names of the candidates will be announced at the nomination board meeting.
It is known that former chairman of Chittagong Zilla Parishad MA Salam, South District Awami League Vice President Abul Kalam Chowdhury, North District Awami League Vice President and Raujan Upazila Chairman AKM Ehechanul Haider Chowdhury Babul, South District Awami League Vice President and Patia Upazila Chairman Motaherul Islam Chowdhury, North District Awami League Vice President Prof. Mainuddin, vice-president ATM Payrul Islam, former vice-president of South District Awami League Lion Shamsul Haque, vice-president of South District Awami League Md. Idris, Director of Rupali Bank and South District Awami League Leader Abu Sufian, Secretary General of Victory Mela Manch of Liberation War. Yunus, former secretary general of Liberation War Victory Fair Parishad Abul Hashem, North District Awami League General Secretary Sheikh Ataur Rahman, Awami League leader Abu Saeed, South District Awami League Joint Secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Ravi, Organizing Secretary Pradeep Dash, Agriculture Affairs Secretary Advocate Abdur Rashid and North District Awami League former leader. Meanwhile, as of Thursday (September 8), 65 people have received nomination papers for the posts of general members and reserved wards, according to the Returning Officer’s office.
