Former SP Babul Akhtar has filed a case against six people, including Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) chief Additional IGP Banaj Kumar Majumder, on charges of custodial torture in the name of interrogation.
Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge on Thursday. Babul appealed the case in the court of Begum Jebunnesa.
September 9 has been fixed for the order after the hearing on the application.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Golam Mawla Murad told Dhaka Times this information.
The other accused in the case are PBI Chittagong District Unit SP Nazmul Hasan, Chittagong Metro Unit SP Naima Sultana, former PBI Inspectors Santosh Kumar Chakma and AKM Mohiuddin Salim and Chittagong District Unit Police Inspector Kazi Enayet Kabir. Plaintiff’s lawyer Gholam Mawla Murad said, ‘The case has been charged under Section 15 (1) of the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act, 2013 and Section 5 (2) of the relevant Act. The application was heard. The court fixed September 19 for the order.
On the morning of June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was shot and stabbed to death near his home on the way to drop off his son in the school bus at Panchlaish Police Station and Ar Nizam Road in the city. Babul Akhtar, the then SP of the police headquarters, filed a murder case in the city’s Panchlaish police station as a plaintiff in the case of the wife’s murder. Babul Akhtar was dismissed from his job in August of that year after various dramas including interrogation at the intelligence office.
The plaintiff in the first case was Babul Akhtar. Later, when a case was filed against him, the PBI got the responsibility of investigating it. Later Babul was arrested by PBI.
