Chittagong: Grapefruit has started coming in the market since the beginning of the season. This fruit is highly valued due to its medicinal properties.

However, the market has not yet recovered due to the high prices.

These grapefruits from the mountainous areas of Chittagong, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban are big in size and have a sweet-sour combination.

If you visit Falmondi, Firingi Bazar, Riazuddin Bazar in the city, every 100 grapefruits are sold for Tk 6,000 to Tk 8,000 depending on the size. Each grapefruit is sold for Rs 80-100 in the retail market.

Even though the season has started, the sales have not yet accumulated, the sellers said. The price is also a little higher due to the increase in transportation cost – they say.

Mohammad Rafiq, a shopkeeper at Firingi Bazaar in the city, told Banglanews that we cannot sell it at the price we bought it. Due to the increase in oil prices, we also have to sell at higher prices. Apart from this, all types of expenses including labor costs have also increased.

He said, these grapefruits come from hilly areas. There are many hurdles to be overcome to bring a carload of grapefruit. Although it is a seasonal fruit, it spoils quickly due to lack of storage. So we have to adjust the price to cover the loss.

In hilly areas of Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban, farmers are benefiting more by growing grapefruit as a mixed fruit along with other fruits. According to the information of the Agriculture Department, among the 10 upazilas of Rangamati, grapefruit cultivation is increasing in Sadar, Longadu, Barkal, Baghaichari, Nanyarchar, Jurachhari and Bilaichari upazilas.

Grapefruit production has increased in Matiranga, Guimara, Dighinala and Manikchari of Khagrachari district. Besides, the cultivation of grapefruit has increased in Chemi Dolupara and Lapaimukh villages of Bandarban. Most of the fruit trees in Lemuzhiri Aga neighborhood of Balaghata in the district town are grapefruit trees. Agriculture department officials said that grapefruit cultivation is being expanded to an average of 30-40 acres of land every year.
