A court in Kushtia sentenced two persons to death and one to life imprisonment for killing a motorcyclist Nazrul Islam alias Latif (30) in Khoksa upazila of Kushtia. Along with that, they have been fined 20,000 taka, and in default of payment, they have been sentenced to one more year of rigorous imprisonment.
Judge Muhammad Tajul Islam of Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court on Sunday (September 4) afternoon confirmed the matter by the court’s Public Counsel (PP) Anup Kumar Nandi.
The convicts sentenced to death are Mojibar Sheikh (37), son of deceased Faiz Sheikh of Dhunchi village of Rajbari Sadar Upazila, Fazlu, son of Tofazzel Ali of Milpara area of Kushtia city. And life sentence accused Khushi Begum (46) wife of Majnu Sheikh of North Shyampur village of Khoksa upazila in Kushtia.
Khushi Begum, the accused who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was present in the court when the verdict was announced. Soon after the verdict was announced, he was sent to the district jail under police guard. Accused Fazlu and Mujibar who were sentenced to life imprisonment are absconding. The court acquitted Azim Sardar in this case as the charges were not proved.
According to court sources, on July 16, 2013, around 9:30 a.m., Nazrul Islam, a hired motorcycle driver, left the house for the purpose of carrying passengers on rent. The police recovered the headless body of Nazrul in the field of Uttar Shyampur village of Khoksa Upazila at around 1 pm on July 17, after he had been missing since afternoon. The accused killed Nazrul by slitting his throat to steal his rented motorcycle. The next day, on July 18, Billal Sheikh, elder brother of the deceased and son of Sajiruddin Sheikh of Kalukhali Upazila of Rajbari filed a complaint against the accused at Khoksa police station.
After the investigation of the case, the investigating officer filed an investigation report against the accused in the court on June 30, 2014. After that, the court fixed the date of verdict on September 4 after the evidence in this case. On the fixed date, the judge of the court ordered the punishment of the accused in the case.
PP Anup Kumar Nandi of the court said that the court sentenced two to life imprisonment and one to life imprisonment as the motorcyclist was found guilty in the murder case of Nazrul Islam. The court acquitted Azim, the other accused in this case, as the charges were not proved.
