Uttara Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) has arrested 4 people including the main accused in connection with the kidnapping of a student of Dhaka University from Kalyanpur in the capital and robbery in Diabari of the capital. The arrested are Shakeel Ahmed Rubel (28), Akash Sheikh (22), Delwar Hossain (55) and Habibur Rahman. A foreign pistol, 2 rounds of bullets, a magazine, a wireless set, 2 motorcycles with police stickers and six mobile phones were seized from them during the arrest. According to DB, Rubel is a professional robber. So far he has committed about 1500 robberies. Apart from robbing, he also behaved indecently with women. Rubel’s main target was university and college girl students. Additional Commissioner of Police (DB Chief) Mohammad Haroon Or Rashid gave this information at a press conference organized at DMP’s media center on Mintu Road in the capital on Sunday (September 4).
Harun Or Rashid said, before picking up the DU student and robbing him, he robbed a motorcycle from Uttara Sector 12 on August 12. He put a police sticker on that motorcycle and abducted the student of DU and took him to Diabari and robbed him. Based on the questioning of Rubel, the DB chief said, “We have initially come to know that Rubel’s home is Gazipur.” His 2 other addresses were found. We are verifying them. Rubel did not rent any house in Dhaka. He used to rent rooms in various hotels in the capital. Then he used to steal or hire motorcycles and target university students or college students. He said, during interrogation, Rubel said that he has so far committed more than 1500 robberies in the whole country including Dhaka. Among them, after the robbery, at least 50 girls behaved indecently. After the robbery, he treated the girls indecently so that they would not speak or complain later for fear of public shame. DB said that Rubel used to choose secluded places for the robbery and took the girls to 300 feet, Diabari and Purbachal areas of the capital. There are 6 robbery cases against him in different police stations. We will remand him and his associates and interrogate him in detail.
DB Pradhan said, we will request that if someone gives police identification, no one should get off his motorcycle. Challenge him and try to know his identity. No policeman ever takes the accused on a motorcycle. Then people like Rubel can be stopped. When asked how a DU student fell into Rubel’s clutches so easily, DB Pradhan said that the student may have mistaken him for the police after seeing the walkie-talkie, pistol and police sticker on his car. But if the student had called the people around him and challenged him, then maybe such an incident would not have happened. When asked whether robbing is Ruble’s profession or addiction, he said, it is both Ruble’s profession and addiction. He used to do these under the guise of the police. To understand this, about 1,500 robberies have occurred. In response to another question, he said that Rubel has been jailed several times. There are also 6 cases against him. When asked about the work of his four associates, he said that they used to help Rubel in different ways. Some used to rent motorcycles and others helped in other ways.
When asked how Rubel got the walkie-talkie, pistol and DMP logo, he said, we will remand him and try to get the details from him. When asked why the cases of fake police are increasing day by day and cannot be stopped, he said that many people do not go to the police station to file a case in these cases. If a case is filed, strict action is taken in these matters. If there is no case, we cannot know these things. When asked if there is a real policeman behind him, he said, “We will remand him and interrogate him further.” Who else is involved with him?
